Addressing the Challenges of Problem Mares

Are you struggling with mares that are difficult to get in foal? You’re not alone. Many breeders and veterinarians face similar challenges, especially with older mares or those with a history of reproductive issues. Yesterday, we hosted an insightful webinar where we delved into this pressing issue.

Understanding the Problem: Streptococcus Infections in Mares

What is the most common bacterium found in a mare’s uterus? According to a comprehensive German study conducted in February 2024, which involved 28,887 swab samples, a staggering 25.9% tested positive for bacterial infections. Of these positive cases, 79.8% were identified as Streptococcus infections, affecting 6658 mares. This data suggests that approximately 20% of all broodmares are affected by Streptococcus.

Consider This:

  • What are the odds that Streptococci become dormant?
  • How much more bacterium could be detected using a biopsy or lavage?

Dormant Streptococci can be particularly challenging to detect and treat, but with the right approach, it’s possible to significantly improve fertility outcomes.
